I’m passionate about crafting. I’ve been making things for longer than I can remember. I adore working with a needle and thread, whether that be patchwork, quilting, traditional lace-making, or even just running up a new set of curtains. My name is Veronica. If you’re anything like me, you probably have dozens of projects on the go, and even more that you’re thinking about starting. You know how it goes; they percolate in the back of your brain, new ideas coming to you as you drift off to sleep, or while you’re driving the kids to school, or when you’re knitting or crocheting a new top. You probably find yourself writing down these ideas all over the place because you know if you don’t, you’ll forget them. I used to write my ideas down in longhand in a big, thick notebook. Trouble is, I tend to lose my notebooks (they usually turn up buried under a pile of fabric samples!) The other problem with notebooks is that if you want to put pictures in them, you’ve got to print them out first. Inevitably the notebooks gave way to my design wall, a big pinboard in my craft room where I could stick up pictures that gave me inspiration, hand scribbled notes about my ideas, and lots and lots of lists of things I wanted to do. My design wall was great, but it came with its own challenges. For one thing, it was, well, just one board. All my projects had to live in the same physical space, all fighting for attention. And the other problem is that the wall lived in my craft room. That idea I had while having lunch? If I wrote it on a note and then managed to not lose the note, well, it might make it to the wall. More often than not, it got lost along the way. So I began trying out notebook app on my iPad to store my ideas instead. I love my iPad and it’s with me all the time, so it seemed the perfect solution. Except, that’s when the problems really started. The apps I tried were either ridiculously complicated — built for corporate teams who needed a week of training — or they were too simple. Fine for jotting down notes, but useless when I wanted to paste in an inspirational image or photo of some fabrics. I needed something different, something more tailored to planning my crafting projects. So, being a maker, I decided I had to make something! Problem! I don’t know the first thing about making apps… Fortunately, my husband does. Harry is a web developer. He’s as passionate about the techie stuff as I am about soft furnishings and bobbins of thread. So naturally, I enlisted his help. Together, we designed and built Design Wall – Where ideas are born. We made the app I always wished existed. We recreated my craft room design wall, but on screen. We made it easy to use, and flexible enough to fit to how you want to use it. We made it so it works just as well on an iPad as it does on the laptop. After all, who doesn’t love curling up on the couch in the evening and planning their next creation in comfort? We thought Design Wall was pretty good. Good enough that we could share it in case anyone else finds it useful too. We’re not a big corporation, it’s just the two of us. We’re not trying to get rich with this app, we just want to get it out there to those who might find it helpful. That’s why we’ve made it free for up to three projects. If you want more, then we charge enough to cover the costs of storing everything safely and securely in the cloud, which means you can access your canvases from any device. We really hope you find Design Wall useful, and have fun planning your next crafty project with it. We’re actively working on the app to make it even better, and have loads of ideas for ways to do that (but without making it too complicated, naturally). If you have ideas for features, comments about the app, or just want to share your feedback, we'd love to hear from you—drop us a line anytime. We wish you all the best with your projects!
